Dear Friends and Family:
So much has happened in these past few months at Turn the Corner Foundation (TTC). Because of your continued support, we have been able to expand our reach and fund many programs that have helped the Lyme disease community. You have brought us even closer to achieving our mission to support research, education, awareness and innovative treatments for Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases. This illness touches the lives of many people and we are proud that so many of you have come together to help “Turn the Corner” on Lyme disease.
We have become the official Outreach Partner to the film Under Our Skin, the first feature-length documentary that takes viewers into the lives of people suffering with Lyme and struggling to find answers and a road back to health. We are very excited about the momentum behind this film. The community premier and launch party in New York City on Monday, May 12, 2008, supported by our foundation, sold out a month in advance of the screening.
We would like to extend our gratitude to everybody who attended our second annual fundraising gala, Unmask A Cure. You helped us raise over $1 million for Lyme disease research and education. We also want to send a special thanks to the Board of Directors and Event Committee, who put in a lot of time and hard work to make the evening memorable and meaningful. We hope you will save the date for our third annual fundraising gala on Thursday, November 13, 2008 at Gotham Hall in New York City.
Lyme disease is a widespread epidemic that has been detected on every continent except Antarctica. It can attack virtually any system in the body and is often mistaken for other illnesses since its symptoms mirror other conditions. Estimates state that only one out of every ten cases of Lyme disease is reported and that many people are frequently misdiagnosed. Contributing to the confusion are the inadequacies of current diagnostic tests and physicians' lack of experience with the disease. Many people afflicted with this disease find themselves going from doctor to doctor wondering what is wrong with them.
While we are making progress, there remains much to be done. We are funding research and helping raise awareness, but there are still many sick people with a dire need for proper diagnosis and treatment. We hope you will join us in achieving our mission.
Sincerely,
Staci Grodin
